Service Reset: BMW 5-Series E61/F10/G38 Oil Light (2003-2021)

Hey, boo. How you doin’? So today, I’ve oil changes, some new tires, and stuff done on the BMW 5-Series E61/F10/G38, and one of the questions people asked was, hey, I got my oil change, but they couldn’t reset my service light. How do I do it?

So in this post, we will show you guys how to reset the service light on a BMW 5-Series. This will be the all series from 2003 to 2021. So when you start, you have the service light on, and we’re going to show you guys how to reset it without using any tools, and all you need is your key. So stay with us.

BMW 5-Series E61/F10/G38 Oil Service Light Reset Guide

Warning! Please note your vehicle model. This tutorial will hold true for the 2003-2021 BMW 5-Series E61/F10/G38 (525i, 530i, 528i, 535i, 540i M550i models).

BMW E60/E61 (525i 530i)

This guide is for BMW E60 (2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009). So let me show you how to go ahead and get this done.

  • So first thing you need is put the key in and then hold the START button until you have all the lights on 
  • Then you need to hold the RESET button on the left of the dash for about five to 10 seconds or until you see the service menu

  • Okay, you can see it is going to comes up then we’re going to ENGINE OIL by hitting the same button briefly
  • Once you get there now we’re going to hold until it says reset
  • After that, hold it again and it’s going to reset it

BMW F10/F11/F07/F18 (528i 535i)

Time needed: 3 minutes

Alright, this is a quick guide for reset service light on BMW F11 (2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017). It’s is super easy to do, even for fellas ladies. So the first thing you want to do is:

  1. Make sure the key is in the car and then hit the START button

    The car is not running keep that in mind the car is actually just in the on position, so don’t step on the brake pedal

  2. Enter to the Service menu 

    Then you’re gonna end up pressing the RESET button on the left side of the cluster and keep holding it down then it should bring you to the Service menu

  3. Go to the ENGINE OIL

    Once you get to the menu you can let go the button and hit the RESET button to scroll over the menu until you find the Engine Oil

  4. Press and hold the RESET button

    Next hold it down again and it’ll asked you if you want to reset

  5. Hold down the RESET button again

    Now let go and hold it down again to confirm so now it will reset

BMW G30/G31/G38 (540i M550i)

This is how to reset your oil service light for BMW G30 (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 model years). Just like the previous generation, we will use the button on the dash to do this. So let’s get right into it.

  • First, you’re gonna hit the START button three times quickly to get it into Diagnostic mode
  • Then you’re going to press and hold the 0.0 button on the dash until the Reset menu comes up

  • Now hit the same button again just to scroll over through the menu until reach to Engine Oil
  • To reset it you need to hold down the 0.0 button again and it’ll ask you to reset
  • So press it again and now you can see reset in progress, wait for the indicator to pop up as reset reset successful
