How To Reset Oil Service Light On BMW 1-Series 120i (E82/F21/F40)

Last Updated on July 31, 2021 by Christ

Good morning guys! I have a little tutorial for you today, so we’re going to be resetting the oil service light on my BMW 1-Series 120i E82/F21/F40. I usually change my own every 5,000 miles or so because this is an older car, so I just changed the oil more often.

When you see that light come on that usually indicates an oil change, don’t worry; it’s nothing major. By the way, if you use synthetic oil, you can go from up to ten thousand miles on it. But if you are using regular oil, the five thousand miles is recommended by the dealership. So let’s go ahead now and try it for ourselves.

So let’s just get on with the tutorial 2007 BMW 120i. I think it should work for all of the models of the E81/E82/E87/E88 from 2004 all the way to 2013. Anyway so let’s get started with the tutorial.

  • First of all put the key into the ignition and then turn the ignition on. So without your feet on the pedals press the START button one time
  • Now we need to do is press and hold a TRIP button on the bottom left corner of the dash and that’s will bring you up straight away to the Service menu

  • Then by using the ▲or▼ button on the left lever I’m just going to flick through to the menu until you find the ENGINE OIL

  • Once you get there you press in the BC button and it’ll say do you want to reset
  • Then hold it again and what will happen is there’s a little counter that will tick down saying it’s resetting and then probably about three seconds later then say yes it’s now been reset

Time needed: 3 minutes

So now that we’ve changed the oil on my BMW 118i F40, we need to tell the car that we changed the oil. So to do so, we need to enter diagnostic mode and reset the interval. Let’s check this out:

  1. Press START button three times

First, get your START button and press it three times pretty quick to enter the Diagnostic Mode. If you don’t do it quick it won’t work so make sure you do it quick

  2. Wait until the Diagnostic Mode Active message pop up

Then you need to wait a seconds and then up here it’s going to say Diagnostic Mode Active

  3. Hold down the BC button

Next, you’re going to press this little BC button on the turn signal stalk and we’re just going to hold that for a little while

  4. Make sure you are on the ENGINE OIL screen

After about 20 seconds or so you’ll get in the service reset menu and it’s going to say Engine Oil. If you’re not there you can use the BC button to scroll through the menu until you reach to the Engine Oil

  5. Press and hold the BC button

After that, you just hold the BC button down again and then after about 10 seconds or so you let it go and it’s gonna say do you really want to reset it

  6. Hold down the BC button again to confirm

Finally, hold it one more time to confirm and you can see now the resetting is in progress as soon as the reset was successful

So that’s how you reset them, pretty straightforward. Obviously, you need to press the right combination of buttons and do it in the right to achieve what you want to achieve. If you have any questions or comments, post them below, and I want to thank you guys for reading.

  1. I am trying to reset the pad light on my 2020 f40 m135i using the same procedure. I have replaced the pads and wear sensor and checked the rears to make sure they are ok which they are, so I use the procedure above to reset the pad light bit the option to reset the pad light never appears. I have tried with my seatbelt on/off with the hand brake on/off and the option to reset the pad light just never appears. Any ideas please?
