Reset Guide: BMW 2-Series F23/G42 Service Light (2014-2021)

What’s going on, everybody? I’m here, and this is going to be a tech tip on how to reset the service light in your BMW 2-Series F23/G42. Obviously, the easiest way to do this is with a diagnostic tool. However, we’re not going to show you how to do it with that because that’s too easy, and most of you will not have that.

So if you have an oil change or brake pads, or brake fluid change, or did a full service on your car and want to reset all these condition-based service indicators, there is also a manual way of doing that, and it doesn’t require any tool at all. So let’s go ahead now and try it for ourselves.

Time needed: 3 minutes

This chapter will show you how to reset the service light on a BMW F22/F23. So do our condition-based service reset, and we’re going to do it all through the instrument cluster, and it doesn’t actually involve the idrive at all. So let me do that right now.

  1. First of all go ahead and turn on your car without starting

You’re going to use the START button, so you press it in without actually starting the car

  2. Hold down the RESET button

Then what you do is press the RESET button on the bottom left hand and then hold it down so it’ll take you on to any of the maintenance lights

  3. Find the OIL ENGINE

After that, you can scroll over to the menu by clicking the same button and find the service minder that you want to reset

  4. Push and hold the RESET button

Now if you want to reset it you just press it down and hold and then it will come up Perform Reset?

  5. Release and hold the RESET button again

You need to hold the RESET button one more time to confirm it and the reset process will be done

This is for the latest generation of BMW 2-Series and you can reset the service interval using the BC button on the end of the left lever. So let’s try to do it.

  • Hit the start button three times quickly and wait until the Diagnostic Mode Active message comes up
  • Then you need to hold the BC button down for a couple of seconds to bring you to the reset menu
  • From there you can scroll the different service. Use the BC button to scroll through the menu until you get to the ENGINE OIL
  • To reset it you need to hold down the BC button again and it’ll ask you about the resetting
  • Finally you let it go and hold it again one more time to confirm it and you’re done

So that’s how you go about resetting condition-based services in a BMW 2-Series. It was just a matter of just holding that button down a couple of times and watching for the prompt, and it’s all done through the instrument cluster. So thanks for reading. I truly appreciate you, see you.
