Reset Guide: BMW Z4 E85/E89/G29 Oil Service Light (2003-2021)

Hi, Bimmer bunch! Today we’re changing the oil on the BMW Z4 with a 2.0 engine. You can probably expect to pay for the oil service light reset at the dealer in this BMW Z4 E85/E89/G29. So you may be wondering why you would do this at home and what’s the point of doing it yourself. Well, you can save a little bit of money.

So overall, you’ll save way more than $50 just by doing this yourself. You get to save a little bit of money. You also get peace of mind that the job is done right and you have the proper oil level in your car. So let’s get straight to work.

BMW Z4 E85/E89/G29 Oil Service Light Reset Guide

Warning! Please note your vehicle model. This tutorial will hold true for the BMW Z4 E85/E89/G29 (2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 model years).

BMW E85 (2003-2008)

  • First, press the S/R button and hold it but at the same time you turn your ignition key to the on position 
  • Now you will see a RESET light on the dash so you can release the button
  • Next, press and hold the S/R button again to make it blinks
  • When it starts blinking you just need to press one more time and now your oil level reset to zero

BMW E89 (2009-2016)

Time needed: 3 minutes

This section will be showing you how to reset this oil light on a BMW Z4 E89. There’s done through the Reset button on the dash and the BC button on the steering wheel. So let’s see how it’s done.

  1. Switch the ignition over to the on position

    Get your key, put it in the slot and then press the START button two times

  2. Hold down the RESET button

    Then you’re gonna press the RESET button and hold it for a few seconds until you get a service menu

  3. Go to the ENGINE OIL

    Once you get there you can scroll with your scroller on the right stalk here up and down until you get to the oil can icon

  4. Hold in the BC button

    To reset it you just press and hold the BC button

  5. Press the BC button again

    Once it’s going to say Reset? press the BC button again to confirm it and you’re done

BMW G29 (2017-2021)

  • First, press the START button three times rapidly so that will put us into a diagnostic mode
  • Wait a second till you see the diagnostic mode active message on the screen
  • Now the actual reset is going to be done from this BC button. So you’re going to press and hold that and it does take a little while for the service reset menu to come up
  • At this point, press the BC button repeatedly to scroll through the service menu and find the ENGINE OIL
  • To reset it you need to press and hold the BC button until the reset question comes up
  • Hold in the BC button once again to execute the engine oil reset
